Leader of the Union Government(UG), Akwasi Addae Odike, has called for the closure of China Malls in Ghana, labeling them as illegal and detrimental to local businesses.

Speaking on Angel Morning Show(AMS), Monday, November 24, 2025, he argued that these malls primarily sell non-Ghanaian goods, undermining the local economy.

“The China malls are illegal under our laws. Ghanaians are supposed to own those businesses. They are doing retailing under the pretext of a mall,” he added.

He accused the Chinese government of deliberately sending individuals to take over local businesses and displace Ghanaian entrepreneurs.

“The Chinese government is intent on sending men to push local business owners out,” he stated.

He added that the China malls in Ghana sell their goods at manufacturing prices and later bounce back to their original prices just to kick down Ghanaian businesses.

“The wholesale prices manufactured at the company in China, the Chinese malls in Ghana sell these products at manufacturing prices to kick Ghanaian who are into small businesses out of the way.

“After spoiling their business, they bounce back to the original prices. We can see that when the China malls are freshly opened, their prices are affordable, and after a while they will start increasing it bit by bit. They are doing retail business here under the pretext of a mall,” he said, and added they falsely operate as malls while engaging in retail business practices.

He urged the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) to investigate the goods sold by Chinese retailers.

“We need to look into the production processes and actual costs of these products. They are cutting prices to eliminate Ghanaian competition, which violates international business practices.”
