President John Dramani Mahama has announced that government will next year make appointments to fill the vacant Minister for Defence and Minister for Environment, Science and Technology positions.

He stated that the government is not in a haste to appoint substantive ministers to occupy those positions.

President Mahama disclosed this on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at the Jubilee House when he hosted some Muslim leaders in a meeting.

His disclosure was to refute claims about recent speculation of names popping up for the two vacant roles following the passing of the late Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Dr. Murtala Muhammed, who until their deaths in the helicopter crash held those positions.

President Mahama reiterated his commitment towards the replacements in 2026 while touching on the size of his government.

“I made a promise not to appoint more than 60 ministers, and some people said how are you going to work with only 60 ministers. As I speak to you today, we’re working with 58 ministers because unfortunately they say Allah gives and Allah takes, he took two of our comrades.

“We haven’t filled those positions yet. I can see people speculating, he is going to appoint a new Defense and Environment Ministers, we are not in a hurry, I’ll do those appointments next year after the Christmas and New year holidays to filled those positions,” he stated.
