An eight-year-old girl has been confirmed dead in a midnight fire outbreak at the Dansoman market in the Greater Accra Region, according to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
The GNFS reported that the minor was trapped within the affected section of the market and was burnt to death.
“Her badly charred body was handed over to the Police for preservation and further investigation,” the Service said in a statement issued on Wednesday, November 26, 2025.
According to the Service, the fire was reported at 00:02 hrs, while its personnel arrived at the scene in two minutes, meeting the blaze at an advanced stage and spreading rapidly in all directions.
“Following a swift scene assessment, they immediately called for reinforcement, leading to the mobilisation of eight (fire engines from Industrial Area, Ministries, National Headquarters, Madina, Weija, Anyaa, and Accra City, supported by two (2) private water tankers from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA),” parts of the statement reads.
The GNFS added that the fire was confined at 01:51 hrs and brought under control at 03:03 hrs while overhauling operations continued to deal with hidden pockets of fire, and the incident was fully extinguished at 05:21 hrs.
The GNFS further reported that the incident resulted in the complete destruction of an unspecified number of wooden structures and shops used for commercial activities, along with their contents.
Meanwhile, it said several adjoining structures and properties were successfully salvaged from total ruin through the timely intervention of firefighters.
According to the GNFS, the cause of the fire remain unkwown at this stage while investigations commenced to ascertain it.
