Managing Director of the State Housing Company Limited (SHC), John S.Bawah, has emphasized the critical role of social housing in the government’s ‘Big Push’ agenda.
Speaking on the Angel Morning Show (AMS) on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, he stated the state cannot have a successful economy when people don’t have places to lay their heads, adding that housing is fundamental to any successful economy.
Mr.Bawah highlighted that housing is essential not just for the ‘Big Push’ agenda but also for the 24-hour economy initiative. He noted that one of President Mahama’s significant priorities is urban redevelopment, which came to a halt after the previous administration left office.
“This initiative began under JM1 but did not gain firm traction until we left office for a few years. Urban redevelopment remains a major focus moving forward,” he mentioned.
He further pointed out that social housing aims to address barriers to housing access. Noting that, the SHC is now looking to optimize land use by developing vertical housing structures to accommodate more residents closer to their workplaces.
“Initially, due to land availability, we were building horizontally. Now, we’re shifting towards vertical developments,” he explained, adding that key locations such as North Kaneshie and Kanda have been identified for these new housing projects,” he expressed.
