The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, has denied allegations that she sanctioned the arrest of the QueenMother of Kwahu, Nana Adwoa Gyemfuor III, who was later released on police orders.

The minister described the claims of her alleged involvement in the incident carried out by unidentified individuals on November 17, 2025, as false.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, December 2, the minister clarified that reports suggesting she ordered the arrest of the QueenMother were baseless, stressing that she had no involvement in the incident and never directed such an action.

According to her, on December 1, 2025, a delegation of Kwahu chiefs visited the Regional Coordinating Council to brief her on steps taken following the arrest of the QueenMother by police personnel.

The chiefs, she stated, led by the Kwahu-Abetifi Hene, informed her that they had engaged the Inspector General of Police, C.O.P. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, who had apologized for the conduct of the officers involved and ordered investigations into the matter.

Madam Awatey explained that she also apologized to the chiefs, not because she sanctioned the arrest, but in her capacity as Regional Minister and Head of the Regional Security Council.

“Never in my submissions did I categorically say that I ordered the arrest of Obahemaa,” she emphasized, adding that her acceptance of responsibility was in line with leadership accountability, just as the IGP had done.

She further noted that the twist of facts threatens ongoing peace processes, but assured that the Regional Security Council remains committed to ensuring peace and security in the Eastern Region.

The minister urged the public to disregard the reportage, which she said was aimed at tarnishing her reputation and that of the Council.

Reaffirming her dedication to duty, Madam Awatey stated, “I reaffirm my commitment to the oath I swore to serve my country and the Eastern Region, God be our helper.”
