The Communications Director for the United Party (UP), Solomon Owusu, has made a humble appeal to President John Dramani Mahama to reconsider its government’s decision on the recent tariff increment in electricity and water.

He said the President should intervene for a reduction, adding that one of the factors contributing to the accrued debt of the Energy Sector is theft, with individuals robbing the company.

Speaking on Angel Morning Show (AMS) on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, he emphasized that the government should review the tariff increment plan to help Ghanaians balance their finances.

According to him, significant theft has occurred over the years in the energy sector, especially during the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, suggesting that if the government recovers such funds, there would be no need for these tariff increments.

“The reason is very simple; there has been a lot of theft in the energy sector. I believe that if we recover those funds, there will be no need to raise rates,” he stated.

Mr. Owusu revealed that the United Party had provided a solution to the incumbent government, stating: “The United Party proposed that the government call all the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to gather all the debts, then let’s assess ECG’s assets.”

“The government should conduct a review, calculate all the debts, and evaluate ECG’s assets, distributing shares to those we owe and improving management,” Mr. Owusu added.
