Former Vice President and presidential hopeful for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2028 general elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, outweighs his competitors in the party’s upcoming primaries slated for January 2026, Samuel Atta Akyea has argued.
The former Member of Parliament (MP) for Abuakwa South Constituency continued that Dr. Bawumia’s political expertise gives him the upper hand over the four other candidates vying for the position.
In a recent interview monitored by Angelonline.com.gh, he stated that the party prioritizes competence rather than tribalism, underscoring that the NPP believes in meritocracy, giving the mandate to the best-qualified candidate.
“Papa Kuffour contested twice and, being an Akan, he was allowed to go. Nana Addo also contested three times; as an Akan, he was allowed to go. Bawumia contested once, and with that, he secured 41.7%, performing better than Kuffour in his first attempt,” he asserted on Wednesday, December 17, 2025.
He argued that Bawumia’s return to the contest would consolidate public support, because his experience from previous contests would improve the NPP’s chances of winning the election.
“Bawumia is the best candidate to win the presidency, when 9 percent is added to 41.7 percent because he has more experience,” he mentioned.
