The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested a suspected narcotic drug trafficker who allegedly attempted to bribe police officers with GH¢150,000 during an operation at Asanso in the Ashanti Region.
The suspect, identified as Atampugri Akanyani, was arrested on January 26, 2026, while driving a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus with registration number AC 718-25.
According to the police, the arrest followed a snap check operation at the Asanso checkpoint, where officers intercepted the vehicle and conducted a thorough search.
The search uncovered nine nylon sacks concealed in the bus, containing dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs. Upon opening the sacks, officers discovered a total of 713 compressed slabs of the suspected substances.
During the arrest, a police statement said, the suspect allegedly attempted to bribe the officers with an amount of GH¢150,000.00, which was declined.
“Police further disclosed that during the arrest, the suspect attempted to bribe the officers with an amount of GH¢150,000, but the offer was firmly declined,” It said further.
The suspect is currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while efforts are ongoing to trace the source of the suspected narcotic drugs and identify other individuals connected to the offence.
