Mahama Cares: GTEC speeds up accreditation for nursing courses

Mahama Cares: GTEC speeds up accreditation for nursing courses

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has announced measures to fast-track accreditation for the proposed Post-Basic Specialized Training Programmes under the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Cares) Initiative.

The announcement was made by Professor Ahmed Jinapor-Abdulai, Director-General of GTEC, on Monday, February 2, 2026, during a courtesy call on Madam Philomina A. N. Woolley, Registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (N&MC) in Accra. The meeting focused on collaboration between GTEC and N&MC to ensure timely accreditation of the specialized programmes.

Professor Jinapor-Abdulai was accompanied by key members of his team, including Mr. Saaka Sayuti, Director for Accreditation; Mr. Felix Awuah, Head of Legal; Mrs. Abena Asafu-Adjaye Nkrumah, Head of Accreditation (Nursing & Allied Health Department); and Mr. Charles Mbeah, Head of Public Relations and Protocol.

Madam Woolley welcomed the Director-General and his team, noting that five nursing and midwifery institutions have been selected to run degree programmes in Emergency Nursing, Cardiology Nursing, Critical Care Nursing, Endocrinology Nursing, Nephrology Nursing, and Oncology Nursing. The institutions are:

  • Nursing and Midwifery Training College (NMTC), Tamale

  • Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) Nursing School, Kumasi

  • Nursing and Midwifery Training College (NMTC), Kumasi

Professor Jinapor-Abdulai commended the Registrar for her work in regulating nursing and midwifery education and assured her of GTEC’s support to have the specialized programmes accredited as quickly as possible.
