KIA renaming reflects misplaced priority of incompetent NDC – Ama Daaku

The government’s resolve to arrest drivers over the collection of unapproved transport fares nationwide would not address the pressing issues facing the sector, Ellen Ama Daaku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has highlighted.

According to her, there are punitive mechanisms the government could deploy to handle the matter rather than resorting to arrests to seek redress from offenders.

It would be recalled that the government, through the Ghana Private Roads and Transport Union (GPRTU), has embarked on a sensitisation exercise in the transport sector by clamping down on drivers charging unapproved fares.

Discussing the subject on Accra-based Angel TV’s morning show dubbed Anopa Bofɔɔ, hosted by Saddick Adams, she stated that it is important for the government to engage stakeholders of the various driver unions to uncover potential issues contributing to their illegal acts and suggest near-lasting solutions.

“There might be reasons influcing these drivers of their act, it is the responsibility of the government to know what is really going on and solve it,” she stated.

She emphasized that arresting drivers is not a priority, as it only adds to their frustration; instead, there should be dialogue to collaboratively find solutions to the transport issues.

“There should be an engagement involving the Ministry of transport, Ghana Private Roads and Transport Union (GPRTU), and the drivers to help address the transport issues in the country,” Madam Daaku added.
