President John Dramani Mahama has warned that the rising migration of skilled health workers is placing growing pressure on health systems across Ghana
He extended the concern to the broader West African sub-region, calling for urgent and practical measures to improve working conditions and retain professionals in the sector.
Speaking at the Annual Conference of the West African College of Surgeons at UPSA, Accra on Monday, February 9, 2026, President Mahama said countries in the region must take deliberate and practical steps to retain health professionals.
He called for improved working conditions, stronger career pathways, better professional recognition, and supportive environments that will encourage health workers to stay and serve.
The President also stressed the need to engage medical professionals in the diaspora to support healthcare delivery in their home countries.
Mr. Mahama further highlighted the role of technology and research in improving surgical education, clinical decision-making, and quality healthcare for patients across the region.
