Madina MP Francis-Xavier Sosu receives PhD in Law, launches vision for Africa’s economic integration

The Member of Parliament for Madina, Hon. Dr. Francis-Xavier Sosu (Esq), has reached a significant academic milestone after being awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law from the University of Ghana (UG).

The two-term lawmaker, seasoned legal practitioner, and policy advocate completed years of intensive research to earn the doctorate, marking the latest achievement in an already distinguished academic and professional journey.

Dr. Sosu’s connection with the University of Ghana runs deep. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), and a Master of Laws (LLM) in Oil and Gas Law from the institution. Additionally, he earned an MPhil from the University of Education, Winneba, before successfully defending his PhD thesis in late 2025. In August 2025, he was appointed a Notary Public by the Supreme Court of Ghana, following a nomination by Chief Justice Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie.

Research Focus on Africa’s Economic Future

Speaking after the graduation ceremony, Dr. Sosu explained that his doctoral work focused on international economic law, with a particular emphasis on regional integration in Africa. His research introduces the AFRICORN 63 Model, a new framework aimed at supporting economic integration across the continent under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement.

“I’m hoping that this work will not end up as one of those studies that just sit on shelves, but one that can influence policy and help Africa integrate economically,” Dr. Sosu said.

He thanked the University of Ghana and his supervisors for their support throughout the research process, singling out Professor Echia, Dr. Aziz Bamba, Dr. Appiah, Dr. Atupari, and Professor Atupari for their mentorship and guidance.

Inspiring the Youth: Education Knows No Limits

Dr. Sosu used the occasion to encourage young people to embrace education and continuous learning.

“There is no limit to what we can do. The world is changing fast, and you cannot hold on to just one thing. Even as a sitting Member of Parliament, I must find time to study, research, and read to expand my scope,” he said.

Reflecting on his personal journey, he shared how education transformed his life:

“If I recount my story from coming from the streets and begging to eat, to standing here today, it shows how education can change a life. Irrespective of your background or who your parents are, you can change your story.”

He further urged young people to remain resilient in the face of obstacles.

“If no one is helping you, help yourself. Rise up and do something for yourself. Everyone can change their destiny using education as a tool.
