Fishermen at Senya Bereku in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region are reeling from losses after armed robbers attacked them at sea late last night, firing warning shots and making away with seven outboard motors.
The incident occurred when the armed men, reportedly using a navy-coloured boat, stormed the fishing grounds under the cover of darkness.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers fired warning shots to scare the fishermen before swiftly detaching the motors mounted on different canoes and fleeing in their waiting boat.
Confirming the incident to journalists, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Awutu Senya West, Kalala Nyamekye Eghan, assured the victims of the Assembly’s support.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizzella Tetteh-Agbotui, disclosed that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has deployed Marine Police to the area to protect fishermen and prevent further attacks.
