The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced the successful rescue of 71 stranded fishermen following a robbery attack at sea near Senya Bereku in the Central Region.
They were left helpless approximately 35 nautical miles off the coast of Gomoa Nyanyano and Senya Bereku on Thursday, February 26, 2026, after alleged armed robbers dispossessed them of their outboard motors and valuable personal belongings.
Some of the boats involved included Argentina 2, Argentina 3, Sea Lion, and Berema Nsukwa, among others.
A coordinated dawn search-and-rescue operation was launched by the Ghana Navy, the Ghana Air Force, and local fisherfolk.
In a statement, GAF said the Navy’s Special Boat Squadron, supported by fast interceptors and additional ships from the Eastern and Western Naval Commands, evacuated 24 fishermen from the sea and 47 others from Tema and Senya Bereku.
The statement explained that findings from the rescued fishermen confirmed that no kidnappings occurred during the incident.
According to GAF, the Navy has since intensified patrols within Ghana’s Exclusive Economic Zone to safeguard maritime users and deter further acts of piracy and armed robbery.
The Armed Forces reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Ghanaian fishermen and maritime safety, while urging them to exercise extreme caution and report any suspicious activity as the situation continues to be assessed.
