President Mahama is enabler of ‘galamsey’ – Former Suame MCE

Former Suame Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Maxwell Ofosu Boakye has accused President John Dramani Mahama of being the “number one enabler” of galamsey (illegal mining).

According to the former government appointee, Mr. Mahama’s commentaries and posture clearly indicate a lack of willingness to combat the issue.

“This government is a huge disappointment to Ghanaians when it comes to galamsey. They have failed totally; in fact, President Mahama is the number one enabler of galamsey; his comments show that he is not willing to end it,” he said on Angel TV.

The former MCE asserted this in a panel discussion on the station’s flagship morning show ‘Anɔpa Bofoɔ’ on Thursday, February 5, 2026.

Speaking further, he pointed out that if the NDC government were genuinely committed to fighting galamsey, they would have dismissed the Akrofrom District Chief Executive (DCE), Gariba Mohammed Mustapha, who is believed to have a background in mining.

Mr. Boakye also highlighted the indiscriminate buying of gold in the country, regardless of its source, whether from legal or illegal mining operations.

He stated that Finance Minister, Ato Forson, mentioned that the country would be buying gold to secure the Ghana Cedis, which he term it as good if it increases reserves, but sharply questioned the cost to the country.
