Nitiwul warns gov’t over Ablakwa’s ‘Nigeria airstrike’ comment

Former Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, has warned that recent comments made by the Foreign Affairs Minister about Ghana’s involvement in airstrikes in Nigeria could pose a serious security risk to the country.

He expressed this after Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa was reported to have indicated that the airstrike by the US, which was targeted at Islamic jihadists in Sokoto in the northern part of Nigeria, was requested by the Nigerian government.

He went on to state that the US and Nigerian governments contacted Ghana to play a role in the airstrike.

Mr. Ablakwa has since come under scrutiny over his remarks with many calling him out considering the recent terrorist activities in the Sahel Region.

Reacting to the development, Mr. Nitiwul, a former Defence Minister under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration condemns the comment and demands further clarity to substantiate his claims.

“What he has disclosed to the world poses a serious risk to all citizens of Ghana and the country as a whole.

“We all want to help fight terrorists and partner with countries like the United States, but no government should allow a foreign country to use our territory to bomb or attack anyone without a formal agreement,” he said during a Minority Caucus caucus presser on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.

Mr. Nitiwul added that the minister reaffirm his call to provide further details about his claims in Parliament.

“The Foreign Affairs Minister must immediately brief Ghanaians through Parliament on how this happened, what permission was used, and under which agreement it was allowed. You cannot put us in harm’s way and get nothing out of it,” he added.

He also noted that terrorist groups operating across West Africa could see Ghana as a target if such issues are not handled carefully.
