Member of Parliament (MP) for Afadjato South, Frank Afriyie has called for the removal of police commanders and other security heads in areas where illegal mining continues to thrive.
Speaking during a parliamentary session, he said it is the responsibility of police commanders and service chiefs to ensure those who destroy the environment are checked.
“It is unacceptable for illegal mining to persist in certain areas despite the presence of security personnel. Heads of these institutions must be held responsible when they fail to act,” he said.
He stated that it is inexcusable for galamsey to continue in communities where chiefs remain in place.
He further appealed to the National House of Chiefs to introduce special Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to hold traditional leaders accountable for activities within their jurisdictions.
He commended the Asante Kingdom’s traditional leader, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for recent actions against chiefs allegedly involved in illegal mining.
“I commend the Otumfuo very well where at least we have seen him removing some of these chiefs from their thrown. This must be scaled up to the national level.
“And indeed police commanders, service chiefs who are in the various districts assemblies it is their responsibility to make sure these guys who are destroying our environment are checked,” he said.
