The leader of the Union Government Movement (UG), Akwasi Addae Odike, has said that the Engineers and Planners Company Limited’s takeover of the Damang mines, should serve as a starting point for Ghanaian indigenous companies to take over businesses in Ghana.

Speaking on Angel FM’s ‘Anopa Bofuo’ show on Monday, 13 April 2026, he emphasised that the move will create employment opportunities for Ghanaian youth and generate profit for the country.

“This should be a shining example to all politicians that one can build it’s capacities to such level to compete with the whites people; the mines in Damang is Ibrahim Mahama taking it to South Africa, is it not in Ghana and Ghanaians that will work in it, is it not Ghanaians that will benefit from it,’ he questioned.

“We don’t always look at the messenger, we look at the message of what is going to benefit Ghanaians,” he stated.

He noted that previously, the white stakeholders in charge of the Damang mines were taking 90% of the profits, while the state received 10%.

He said this meant that, with the full transfer, all 100% of the profits would now belong to Ghanaians, keeping the revenue and benefits within Ghana rather than sending them overseas.

He asserted that foreign stakeholders have taken advantage of Ghanaians for a long time by claiming that Ghanaians lack the capacity to run firms and businesses in Ghana, thereby allowing them to take over and keep the larger share of profits, leaving Ghanaians with only smaller returns, arguing that this development will encourage others to build their capacities.

He further commended Ibrahim Mahama for strengthening his capacity to the level of taking over the Damang mines, saying this will benefit both the people and Ghana as a whole.

“So kudos to Ibrahim Mahama, if you are a too much nationalistic and you see Ibrahim Mahama’s philanthropist behaviour in Ghana, you don’t need a suit sayer to tell you that man deserves more than this, so Mr Ibrahim God bless you for expanding your industries and also helping Ghanaians with your money,” he uttered.
