A tragic illegal mining (galamsey) incident at Assin Dansame has left two people dead and one miner in critical condition after a newly dug pit collapsed on Thursday, April 23, 2026 around 1:00 p.m.
According to report by Angel FM’s correspondent, Kwame Owusu Asante Shadrach, eight miners were working inside the pit when its walls suddenly caved in, trapping three workers under loose soil and debris.

Residents and fellow miners launched a rescue operation, but the unstable terrain and depth of the collapse complicated efforts.
The three victims were eventually recovered from the rubble.

The sole survivor was rushed to a nearby health facility where medical staff described his condition as extremely critical, and he is receiving emergency treatment for multiple injuries.
The deceased victims are a 22‑year‑old woman and a 25‑year‑old man whose bodies have been deposited at the New Edubiase Government Hospital morgue.
Police have opened an investigation into the incident.

Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) are set to visit the site to assess safety breaches and provide support to the bereaved families.
Assin North District NADMO Director, Mr. Edward Fireson confirmed the incident and said steps are being taken to intensify the fight against illegal mining in the area.
