The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has briefed President Mahama on the reconstruction of the La General Hospital in La, within the La Dade-Kotopong Municipal Assembly.

The briefing follows the President’s visit to inspect the progress of work at the La General Hospital.

Speaking on Friday, April 24, 2026, the minister said that the project’s sod-cutting took place in 2024 after funds were released for the extension.

He explained that, due to delays, the project could not proceed as planned.

“In 2020 sod was cut for the redevelopment but the original projects is financed by UKEF the disbursement was due to some delays by the government and debt restructure that finance couldn’t go through,” he stated.

He added that in 2024, the project was repackaged with an amount of about €50 million, and work began.

However, he noted that further delays led to the suspension of the work again.

He further stated that in late 2025, about $60 million was paid after the work resumed early this year.

He indicated that, once completed, the facility will serve more than 150,000 people in the surrounding areas, thereby easing pressure on other hospitals.

“We paid them 2025, we paid about $60 million and they had to come to site since earlier this year, this facility is serving more than 150,000 people from the surrounding areas, when this is completed it is going to ease the pressure on the other hospitals,” he said.
