The Ghana High Commission in South Africa has advised Ghanaian nationals, particularly those in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, to exercise heightened caution and continuous vigilance following the ongoing xenophobic attacks coupled with anti-immigration protests.
According to the Commission, there are indications that protest activity, crowd gatherings, and intermittent disruptions are likely to continue occurring in areas including the Johannesburg CBD and its surroundings, the Durban CBD and its surroundings, and other major transport corridors.
In light of this, members of these communities have been advised to continue to avoid all protest sites, public demonstrations, large gatherings, and to limit non-essential travel to identified hotspot areas.
“Keep valid identification and immigration documentation readily available; and refrain from engaging in confrontations, inflammatory discussions, or the circulation of unverified information on social media,” the Commission noted further.
Ghanaian business owners have also been advised to remain alert, review local security conditions regularly, and take reasonable precautions to safeguard staff and property.
The Mission further calls on all members of the Ghanaian community to “remain calm, law-abiding, and cooperative with local authorities at all times.”
This advisory comes in light of the evolving situation regarding ongoing anti-immigration demonstrations and marches in certain parts of the country.
