The Union of Industry, Commerce and Finance Workers (UNICOF) has recognised the dedication and hard work of its staff by honouring outstanding employees during this year’s Workers’ Day celebration in Accra.

The union comprises prominent companies such as Silver Star Auto, Nestle Ghana Ltd, GB Foods (Gino), Coca-Cola, Stanbic Bank, GCB, ABSA, Latex Foam, Consolidated Bank Ghana, Cosmo Sea Foods Company, and Interplast, among others.

They commemorated the celebration with a health walk exercise, starting from Obra Spot and ending at Independence Square, where awards were presented to the outstanding workers.

Speaking to the media, Deputy General Secretary of UNICOF, Godfred Agbevanu, highlighted the union’s commitment to protecting workers’ interests and equipping members with skills to improve productivity.

“As an advocacy group, a group that is always championing the interests of workers, ensuring that workers are secured in their various workplaces, job security is one of our prime objectives. So, we involve ourselves in so many things within the industry and national circles, particularly leading our various unions and locals to have appropriate negotiations with their management, ensuring that trainings that will enhance our base in terms of skills appreciation are provided so that workers will add value to what they do for effective productivity,” he said.

Tema Regional Chairman of UNICOF, Ransford Bonney, also explained that the union has been divided into 11 regions to effectively address workers’ welfare and salary negotiations.

“UNICOF has 11 regions because Tema is also another region under the umbrella of UNICOF. Tema is a big hub because we all know that most industries are located in Tema.

UNICOF prioritizes workers, their negotiations, and welfare very well, so we have divided Greater Accra into two, which are the Greater Accra Region and the Tema Region. This is to give the leaders enough time and energy to take care of the needs of all workers,” he stated.

An awardee from the Tema Region, Mavis Naa Aforkor Odai, encouraged more institutions and workers to join the union, citing the benefits and exposure it offers members.

“Being part of the union has been an emerging influence and has given me exposure, as I received this award today. It has not been just about me; it has been teamwork. It has been hard work and dedication, and I thank God for this day.

I encourage all workers to join UNICOF because if you don’t have a mouthpiece, it will be very difficult for you to move on as an employee. They don’t just come in for the employer or employee; they speak for both of us. They also have training sessions where you will be trained as a leader. UNICOF has really grown and trained me, so I encourage everyone to join UNICOF,” she noted.

The event was attended by workers from various member companies, who celebrated the occasion and acknowledged the union’s efforts in promoting workers’ welfare.
