Singer and songwriter Gyakie has revealed that she never imagined pursuing music as a full-time career, despite growing up in a music-oriented home.
Speaking in an exclusive interview, the “Forever” hitmaker disclosed that her mother played a major role in shaping her confidence and passion for performing from a very young age.
According to Gyakie, her mother would often make her perform in front of visitors at home, a situation she admittedly found uncomfortable at the time.
“I never thought I’d do music as a profession growing up, but my mum made me perform at home against my will so many times. If she had friends over, she would call me to come and sing while holding bottles and body lotion. It used to annoy me a little bit, but she knew what she saw at that time,” she shared.
The singer also credited her father and family environment for exposing her to music early in life. Growing up around studio sessions, rehearsals, and musicians constantly visiting their home gradually sparked her interest in the craft.
“My dad also, because we grew up around music, we all loved music in the house. Seeing him rehearse at home, seeing artistes coming in and out of the house, I knew music was happening around me,” she added.
Although she was heavily involved in entertainment activities during her school days, serving as an entertainment prefect and participating in music, dance, and acting, Gyakie said she did not seriously consider music as a career until she released her first song.
She explained that the overwhelming positive feedback she received from listeners made her realize her potential.
“The common thing people kept saying was that my voice is really unique and the song is really nice. That was when I started paying attention to it seriously and decided to make it a business,” she said.
