The Ministry of Health has activated precautionary measures nationwide after reported cases of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, although Ghana has not recorded any suspected or confirmed cases.

Ebola Virus Disease is described as a severe viral illness spread through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected persons or contaminated materials and surfaces.

Its symptoms include fever, weakness, headache, vomiting, diarrhea, and, in severe cases, bleeding.

In a statement dated Monday, May 18, 2026, the ministry said it is working with the World Health Organization, Africa CDC, and other international partners on measures to strengthen the country’s preparedness and response systems.

Measures currently in place include enhanced surveillance and screening at airports, seaports, and land borders, and increased monitoring of travelers arriving from affected countries.

Health workers are also being trained and equipped to identify, isolate, and manage suspected cases safely.

The ministry said public health emergency coordination and rapid response systems have been activated, alongside intensified public education, risk communication, and community awareness activities.

The public has been advised to remain calm and observe preventive measures. These include washing hands regularly with soap and running water or using alcohol based hand sanitizers, avoiding direct contact with bodily fluids of sick persons, and avoiding handling dead bodies without proper protection.

The ministry also urged people to avoid handling or eating sick or dead wild animals and to ensure all meat is properly handled and thoroughly cooked before consumption.

The ministry also urged anyone with suspected symptoms to report immediately to the nearest health facility.

The ministry cautioned the public against spreading misinformation and said updates should only be relied on from the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service.

The statement was signed by the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, who reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to protecting the health and safety of all persons in Ghana while monitoring the situation closely.
