Two people have died, and two others injured after a single-room structure collapsed in Cape Coast during a heavy downpour early Sunday, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed.

The incident occurred at Gyagyaano, behind Yogurt Fie on Idan Fourth Alley, following intense rainfall that began overnight.

The Service said it received a distress call at 4:54 a.m. and arrived at the scene by 5:06 a.m.

Rescue crews from the Cape Coast Metro and Regional Headquarters Sub-Stations extricated all four trapped occupants from the rubble by 6:19 a.m.

The victims, one male and three females, were transported by the National Ambulance Service to Ewim Polyclinic for treatment.

A follow-up at the hospital confirmed the deaths of 12-year-old Anastasia Abakah and 40-year-old Adwoa Baduwa. The conditions of the two other survivors were not immediately disclosed.

Preliminary investigations by GNFS indicate the collapse was caused by heavy rainfall, which compromised the structural integrity of the building.

The service thanked supporting agencies for their collaboration in the rescue operation.

The Service urged residents in the Cape Coast Metropolis living in old mud structures or buildings showing signs of weakness to have them assessed by qualified experts, adding that occupants should “immediately evacuate any structure deemed unsafe, especially during this rainy season.”
