The Ministry of Health has intensified measures to prevent disease outbreaks following recent floods that affected parts of Accra, including Circle VIP, Neoplan Station, and the Achimota-Aloboshie community.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, said he had undertaken field assessments in the affected areas to evaluate conditions on the ground and facilitate the rapid deployment of interventions.

The Minister has directed the Ghana Health Service to scale up disease surveillance, strengthen risk communication, and deepen community-level interventions in all affected districts.

Health workers have also been urged to intensify public education on preventive practices, with support from the media, traditional and religious authorities, and educational institutions.

To address critical water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) concerns, the Ministry has convened a coordinated engagement with the Ghana Health Service, the Ambulance Service, Faith-based Service Delivery Agencies, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), and the Ministry of Local Government.

The Ministry is also calling on all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies to collaborate with health authorities to enforce environmental sanitation measures to reduce public health risks. Food vendors have been directed to comply strictly with food hygiene standards.

Residents have been advised to clear drains, remove stagnant water, maintain clean surroundings, and exercise caution as flooding may displace reptiles and other harmful animals into communities.

The Ministry further urged Ghanaians to practice good hygiene, drink safe water, wash hands regularly with soap, eat well-cooked food, and promptly report symptoms of illness to the nearest health facility.

The public was also cautioned to rely only on verified information from official sources.

“The Ministry assures the public that the situation is under control and that all necessary measures are being taken to safeguard public health. We remain committed to ensuring service delivery is sustained,” the release stated.
