A 15-year-old boy, Alhasan Asan, has died after a midnight fire destroyed a six-bedroom residential building at Suame Post Office in the Ashanti Region.
The fire broke out around 1:00am while occupants of the house were asleep, trapping the teenager inside the burning building.
According to the boy’s aunt, Nana Akua, the flames spread rapidly and engulfed the entire structure before residents could mount an effective rescue effort.
Neighbours who rushed to the scene said they heard cries for help but were unable to save Alhasan, who was trapped in the inferno and burnt beyond recognition. The fire also destroyed household items and personal belongings estimated to be worth thousands of cedis.
The incident has left residents of the Suame Post Office community devastated, with many describing the deceased as a calm, respectful and well-behaved young boy.
“It was around 1am. We saw smoke and fire everywhere. By the time we got there, it was too late. We are all shocked,” a resident said.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) later arrived at the scene and brought the fire under control. However, reports indicate that the fire tender arrived without water, raising concerns among residents.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, while the police have deposited the remains at the morgue for preservation and identification as investigations continue.
