Akrade residents decry Ghana Railway Authority drainage as death trap

Residents of Akrade in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region have raised alarm over a life-threatening drainage constructed by the Ghana Railway Authority during the Tema-Mpakadan railway project.

Speaking to Angel News in Akrade, Nana Acheampong, Mrantehene of Akrade, said the drainage has become a death trap for residents of the community whenever it rains.

According to him, the volume of water passing through the drainage has widened it and caused severe land degradation as the runoff washes away the surrounding land.

He added that the Railway Authority should have extended the drainage to connect to the main gutters, which he believes would have solved the problem in the community.

Nana Acheampong has therefore threatened to take legal action against the Ghana Railway Authority over what he describes as shoddy work that is endangering residents of New Akrade and its environs, if they do not return to continue and complete the construction of the drainage.

The Assembly Member for Akrade Electoral Area, Prince Christopher Kwabena Sey, is also appealing to the Asuogyaman District Assembly to urgently intervene and bring back the contractors to complete the drainage works in order to protect lives and property in the area.

Residents say the situation worsens during the rainy season, making movement dangerous for both children and adults in the area.
