The Deputy Presidential Spokesperson for His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, Shamima Muslim has strongly urged Ghanaian media organizations and Public Relations Officers to establish dedicated daily platforms to educate the public on environmental hygiene and good sanitation practices.
Speaking at the Information Services Department (ISD) Press Center in Accra during the celebration of Public Relations Day on Saturday, July 18, 2026, she emphasized that the government cannot tackle the country’s sanitation challenges alone and requires a robust partnership with the press to drive national behavioral change.
Addressing the gathering, Ms. Shamima stated that the media holds a unique power to influence public habits and shape national discourse.
She proposed that media houses deliberately reserve airtime and print space daily specifically to discuss sanitation issues, share hygiene tips, and keep environmental cleanliness at the forefront of the public mind.
“The government cannot do it alone,” Shamima revealed, explaining that state infrastructure and policies must be supported by active civic participation.
She stressed that building a cleaner nation relies heavily on creating consistent awareness, an area where the media’s reach is invaluable.
Ms. Shamima also strongly admonished citizens to change their attitude toward waste disposal.
She urged Ghanaians to strictly refrain from the chronic habit of dumping rubbish into gutters and storm drains, a practice that consistently leads to choked drainage systems and severe seasonal flooding.
Shamima stressed that “a clean environment is a shared national responsibility that ultimately safeguards public health, preserves dignity, and builds a sustainable future for the country.”
