Black Stars assistant coach Roger De Sa has opened up on how injuries became a significant setback for Ghana at the 2026 World Cup.
The South African tactician attributed Ghana’s struggles to the absence of some key players, including Mohammed Kudus and Alexander Djiku.
In an interview with Flashscore, De Sa emphasised the impact of the absences, particularly in the defensive unit, which compelled the technical team to rely on inexperienced centre-backs.
“We had lost four regular players, including both centre-backs, winger from Tottenham Hotspur (Mohammed Kudus) and a midfielder. The absence of the centre-backs was particularly concerning because it meant using younger, less experienced players.
“Some of the players we were considering were also not getting regular game time at their clubs, so the selection process was challenging. You could travel to another city to watch a player, take your seat in the stadium and then find that he was on the bench,” he added.
He further shed light on the team’s difficult preparations for the tournament, which ultimately ended with what he described as a “satisfactory” result.
Ghana finished 24th in the tournament, according to FIFA’s rankings, after exiting at the Round of 32.
