Communication team member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and legal practitioner, Kwasi Kwarteng, has called on the Minister for Education and the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to step aside to allow for a credible probe into alleged sexual abuses at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, October 20, Kwarteng argued that accountability cannot end with the two directors who were asked to step aside by the GES.
“Both the Education Minister & the Director-General of GES should step aside if the government is serious about investigating the Obuasi SHS abuses,” he wrote.
According to Kwarteng, the Old Students’ Association of Obuasi SHTS petitioned the Ministry of Education, the GES, its Director-General, the Ashanti Regional Director and other stakeholders as far back as July 26, 2026, over allegations of continued sexual exploitation and abuse involving the headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai.
He further alleged that the Ashanti Regional Director of Education, William Amankrah Appiah, personally sought the intervention of the Director-General but to no avail.
“I am further reliably informed that the Ashanti Regional Director personally sought the Director-General’s intervention, but to no avail. If this account is accurate, accountability cannot justifiably end with the removal of only the regional and district directors,” he stated.
Kwarteng said if government is genuinely committed to addressing the matter, the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, and the GES Director-General must also step aside pending an independent investigation into how the complaints were handled, who knew what, and why decisive action was delayed for 79 days until an investigative report by journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni brought the issue into the public domain.
