Two suspected robbers were on Tuesday, June 9, 2020, shot and killed at Santasi in the Nhyiaeso Constituency after engaged in a shootout with a police team from the Ashanti Region Police Command.
A police officer who was shot by the robbers during the gun battle, is said to be responding to treatment.
Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, ACP David Agyemang Agyem, said the Command prior to the operation, had picked an intelligence that a group of armed robbers who are noted for snatching vehicles and robbing mining sites, was preparing to embark on a robbery expedition.
According to ACP Agyem, the Command deployed the patrol team to foil the robbery and arrest the suspects.
“When the suspects realised they were being pursued they started firing at the police patrol team and they shot one police officer. Their action forced the police to also fire and two of the six robbers were shot dead on the spot during the gun between the police and the robbers,” he told the media on Wednesday, June 10.
The Commander added that “The other robbers managed to escape with their wounds and abandoned their BMW vehicle with registration number GR 7615-12.”
He added that two ammunition were retrieved from the robbers who were shot dead.
“We suspect that the armed robbers were responsible for the shooting incident at Manso/Dadiease, which resulted in the death of three persons, including driver of the DCE for Amansie West, William Asante Bediako on May 18, 2020.
“We are appealing to doctors and herbalists to inform the police of anybody who will visit them with suspected gunshot wounds,” he pleaded.
