NPP Primaries: Akufo-Addo advises MASLOC Boss to step down

The President, Nana Akufo-Addo has advised Chief Executive Officer of Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Stephen Amoah to step down to make way for the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Kennedy Kwasi Kankam to go unopposed in the Nhyiaeso Parliamentary race.

Responding to allegations made against him by the constituency chairman, Mr Joe Cad, saying, that he has refused to step down, disrespecting the President’s advise; Stephen Amoah said:

“Yes, the President asked me to step down to pave way for incumbent to go unopposed which I’m not disputing. But from the look of things, delegates in the constituency are pushing for me to contest, that’s where the whole issue lies. I can’t challenge the president, he’s my father and I respect his decision but we’re still speaking with some party elders to intervene,” Mr Amoah said on Angel Fm’s flagship program – Angel in the Morning.

According to Stephen Amoah, delegates in the constituency are rallying behind him and appealing to him to contest due to his good deeds towards residents in the constituency and his contribution to the party.

“My earnest contribution to our dear party and people of Nhyiaeso has won me the affection of many. I’m not arrogant as being reported. That is just a way to discredit me and to stop me from contesting.

“Go to the Constituency and witness it for yourself; I’m being mobed like a king. The people hunger and thirst for change. They need a new face. And you don’t need me to tell you this.! But like I said early on, We’re hoping to find a way around it soon.’

On April 30, 2020, the General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, hinted that the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party may handpick parliamentary candidates for the 2020 elections, should the party be unable to hold primaries due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Boadu in a media interview said the party’s NEC is clothed with the power to decide who represents the party as a parliamentary candidate, saying that may be an option on the table.

However, Pollster Ben Ephson has also predicted the Party (NPP) will lose not less than 400,000 votes in the December 2020 general elections should the party sidestep its primaries and hand-pick parliamentary candidates.

He explained that apathy will set in if parliamentary candidates are picked and imposed on voters especially in their strongholds.
