Flagbearer for the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has directed the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General to discontinue the prosecution of an NDC organiser in Agona West, stating that no legal action should be pursued in his name without his knowledge.

In a statement released by his office on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, Dr. Bawumia said his attention had been drawn to the arrest and arraignment of the party organiser for allegedly publishing false news and making offensive comments about him.

He stated categorically that he did not lodge any complaint and did not sanction any prosecution against the individual or any other citizen.

“He has neither lodged any complaint nor sanctioned any prosecution against this young man or any other citizen.

“He does not desire, and will not endorse, the arrest or prosecution of any Ghanaian in his name for speech,” the statement said.

Dr. Bawumia said he has been the target of insults and falsehoods throughout his public life, but has consistently chosen not to use state power in response.

“His conviction remains that the answer to offensive speech is better speech, and the answer to falsehood is truth, not handcuffs, courtrooms, and crushing bail conditions imposed on ordinary Ghanaians,” the release noted.

The NPP Flagbearer therefore respectfully called for the immediate discontinuation of the prosecution and “any similar actions purportedly undertaken on his behalf.”

He also appealed for the young man to be released to return to his family and livelihood.

According to Dr. Bawumia, Ghana’s democracy is strengthened when citizens, including political opponents, can speak freely without fear of arrest.

The statement added that Dr. Bawumia forgives the young man, wishes him well, and urged all political actors to focus on issues that affect the Ghanaian people.
