Private legal practitioner, Akwasi Amofa-Agyemang, has publicly declared his intention to contest the December election as an independent parliamentary candidate at Bekwai Constituency in the Ashanti region.

Mr. Amofa-Agyemang was disqualified from contesting in the New Patriotic Party primary in June, paving way for the incumbent, Joseph Osei-Owusu, who is also the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, to go unopposed.

Mr. Amofa-Agyemang told Angel 102.9 FM on Tuesday July 7, 2020, that following his disqualification, he received numerous calls to go independent.

Based on that, he said, he did extensive consultation with the family and opinion leaders leading to his conclusion to heed their calls.

According him, after going round the constituency and judging by the groundswell of support he received, he was certain of winning the parliamentary election on December 7.

He added that the decision was thought through to encourage people who had hitherto decided not to register for the new voter ID, let alone vote in December to reconsider their decision.

“I know I can save the seat for the NPP; without me the party can lose the seat,” he said in Akan.

Asked what the electorate in his constituency are expecting from their representative, he said, they want an MP who will be available when needed, who is willing to listen to their concerns as well as support the youth and farmers in the area.

Mr. Amofa-Agyemang claimed the constituents have been made “orphans” due to the poor relationship between them and the Member of Parliament.

He also mentioned that some native of Bekwai do not respect persons outside that township and have vowed not to vote for “any villager” to become the MP of Bekwai. This, he said, has angered the rest of the communities to vote for one of their own who understands their situation to represent them in parliament.
