75 SHS, Nursing students test positive for COVID-19 in Western Region

he Western Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Jacob Mahama, has disclosed that 75 students from 13 educational institutions have tested positive for the novel coronavirus in the region.

According to him, Nsein Senior High School in the Nzema East municipality recorded 26 positive cases followed by the Shama Senior High School, which has  recorded 19 positive cases out of the 46 samples taken from the school.

The Asankraqwa Nursing and Midwifery School in the Amenfi West District also recorded six positive cases of the virus.

Briefing the press at Sekondi on Friday, July 24, 2020, Dr. Jacob Mahama assured the people of their relentless efforts to continue to monitor and manage the cases in their resolveto stop the spread of the infection on campus.

He indicated that as at July 23, 2020, a total of 2,467 positive cases of the virus have been recorded.

According to him, 2,216 patients have recovered and discharged while six others died.

He added that the Tarkwa-Nsuaem municipality leads the chart with 639 cases, followed by Sekondi-Takoradi recording 632 cases and Amenfi West municipality recording 442.

Dr. Mahama, mentioned the refurbishment of Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital, the construction of the trauma centre at Agona Nkwanta and remodeling of Mpohor Health Centre as the new projects to be carried out in the region.

The other projects are the construction of hospitals in Nsuaem in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem municipality, Shama District, Elubo Poly Clinic and Bogoso District Hospital as some projects being executed to provide quality healthcare delivery to the people.

He also cited inadequate transport systems, renovation of DHMT blocks, inadequate Anaesthetics among others, as some major challenges facing the health directorate in the region.
