A Deputy Minister for Health, who doubles as a member of parliament for Weija-Gbawe Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Gifty Tina Naa Ayele Mensah, has said that government is poised to ending child mortality in Ghana.

Child mortality continues to be a major public health problem in Ghana, especially in northern Ghana where child survival rates are among the lowest.

The lawmaker mentioned that, in order for Ghana to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 3, the government has built many health centres and renovated the deplorable ones to make quality health care accessible to everyone.

She said this in a press briefing during the handing over ceremony of the Public Health Demonstration Clinic at Gbawe in the Weija–Gbawe Constituency.

Tina Mensah lamented that, no woman should lose her life or that of her baby’s life during and after labour.

She said that, “why should it be the case that when a woman is going to deliver a baby, she would lose her life or the baby in the process. No, it must not be the case”

She further listed the possible causes of child mortality saying negligence of health professionals and far distance of the hospital are factors.

Also, the Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe recounted the number of health projects established in the constituency aimed at eradicating child mortality and other health-related challenges in her constituency.

She urged the people to make use of the clinics and desist from drug abuse.

“It is the aim of the Ministry of Health to make health care delivery accessible and bring it to the doorsteps of everyone”, she stated.

Speaking in the Twi local language she added that, she has donated over 100,000 worth of hospital equipment to the health directorate to retool hospitals and chips compound.
