EC confirms registering 16.9m voters; over 1.3m first time voters

The Electoral Commission has announced that a total number of 16, 963, 306 voters successfully registered at the end of the 2020 Voters Registration exercise.

EC Chairperson, Jean Mensaa revealed, during the ‘Let The Citizen Know’ press briefing on Wednesday, August 12, 2020, that 30,814 were registered at the mop-up exercise, in addition to the 16,932,492 registered in the main exercise, brought the total national figure to 16,963,306.

According to the EC, a total of 1,375,048 registered voters made up of 762,944 who are 18 years old and 612,104 who are 19 years old representing 8.1% of the total register would be voting for the first time in December.

Giving a regional breakdown of the total figures, she said Greater Accra Region led with a total of 3,509,805 registered voters, followed by Ashanti Region with 3,013,856 registered voters.

Central Region also follows with 1,566,951, Western Region have 1,185,315 registered voters whilst Northern Region adds up with 1,047,539 registered voters.

Volta, Upper East, Bono, Bono East, Upper West, Western North, and Oti Region follows respectively with 929,32, 653,730, 648,408, 592,015, 470,271, 465,444, and 353,492 voters, with Ahafo Region having the least figure of 315, 827 registered voters.

However, she explained that the total number of registered voters are the provisional figures pending process of deduplication.

Jean Mensa hints the figures could be reduced after the process. “The process of deduplication which is ongoing will flag multiple registration in the system.”
