Running mate to the 2020 flgbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has promised to end the double track system that has been initiated by the Akufo-Addo government to solve the increasing numbers in Senior High Schools (SHSs).

She made this promise during the party’s manifesto launch on Monday, September 7, 2020 at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).

The double-track system was introduced by the NPP government as a solution to the increasing numbers in SHS that came as a result of the free SHS policy.

According to her, this initiative by the Akufo-Addo government has brought nothing but untold hardship and burden on parents and the students as well.

“As a result, without proper planning, the NPP government introduced the Free Senior High School (SHS) Programme which was to come as no cost to parents, as promised. Unfortunately, it has rather increased the cost of burden on some parents. Confronted with the challenge of lack of space due to abandoned Community Day Schools, this Government has resorted to the double-track system that has brought untold inconveniences to students, teachers and parents and negatively impacted quality teaching and learning,” she said.

The NDC, she added, will implements “a better and improved” free secondary education that will benefit everyone.

“We are committed to implementing a better and improved Free Secondary Education Programme and will consequently end the dreaded double-track system which has increased cost of SHS education for some parents”, Prof Opoku-Agyemang stated.

She has therefore assured that the next NDC government will work towards better reforms in the Senior secondary school sector and also eliminate the unfavorable conditions causing deaths in secondary schools.
