World War (II) veteran, Private Joseph Hammond, has finally brought to a close his two mile walk per day as part of a fundraiser to support Africa’s front-line health workers.

The 95-year-old World War (II) veteran, who took up the initiative as his contribution to the fight against the CoronaVirus pandemic, explained that his inspiration stems from Captain Tom Moore of the United Kingdom who through a similar act raised 33 million pounds ($40m) to help the National Health Service.

Marking his final walk today, the veteran was joined by broadcaster Abeiku Santana, Philanthropist Nana Kwame Bediako, the First National Bank (FNB) and a host of other persons to conclude the two-mile- walk-per-day fundraiser.Joseph Hammond

After donating an amount of Ghc12,000 to Mr Hammond, Mr Dominic Adu, CEO of FNB bank said that they are proud to be part of the veteran’s last walk and to share in his story.

Mr. Adu added that it is their fervent hope and prayer that First National Bank will look back in the future and also tell their story as the best bank that ever existed in Ghana.

Ghanaian Philanthropist and business mogul, Nana Kwame Bediako also known as Freedom Jacob Caesar donated a fully furnished house to Veteran Joseph Hammond who lived 75years of his life in his family home in Accra to support him.

On his part, Private Joseph Hammond expressed gratitude to the Philanthropist and the First National Bank for their support towards his cause.

Veteran Joseph Hammond began his fundraiser walk on Tuesday, May 19, 2020 as a means of contributing to the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

His noble gesture went viral and attracted a number of corporations and individuals to reciprocate the goodwill and stretch their arm of support to the veteran.

The Private’s two-kilometre walk a day to raise funds to support COVID-19 frontline workers and vulnerable veterans earned him the “Commonwealth Points of Light Award” from the British Queen.

Private Joseph Ashitey Hammond was also promoted by President Akufo-Addo to the rank of Warrant Officer Class One (WO1), for his patriotic exploits and continuous service to the nation.
