We were not served any court summons – Haruna Iddirssu

The Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu has reacted to the ruling of the Cape Coast High Court cancelling the results of the 2020 Parliamentary election results in the Assin North Constituency.

The ruling prohibits James Gyekye Queyson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from holding himself as the legally elected Member of Parliament (MP) for the Assin North Constituency.

Addressing a press conference in Parliament on Tuesday, Mr Iddrissu opined that Mr Quayson won the elections genuinely and did not hold allegiance to Canada as was ruled by the court because, “Mr Quayson denounced his dual citizenship to Canada in February 2019, at least, before the elections”.

A Cape Coast High Court presided over by Justice Kwasi Boakye cancelled the parliamentary elections in the Assin North constituency and ordered the conduct of fresh elections in the constituency.

The court has restrained the Assin North MP from holding himself as the MP for the constituency.

According to the Minority Leader, the NDC remains unshaken by the ruling insisting that the Assin North seat is for the NDC and would remain theirs.

He however indicated that the party will challenge the ruling at the Appeals Court since according to him, the Cape Coast High Court Judge erred in law and justice.

He however warned that the country’s democracy is in danger as the ruling will affect the level of cooperation in Parliament.

Responding to concerns raised by Mr Haruna Iddrisu, the majority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam Adoagyiri, Frank Annor Dompreh said, he was surprised to hear the minority leader making such comments because, the NPP warned the NDC against entertaining the Assin North MP as legitimately elected Legislator.

This caution, he said, was sounded on the eve of the swearing of this Parliament on 7th January, 2021.

Mr Annor Dompreh therefore advised the minority leader and his people to challenge the outcome of the Cape Coast High court ruling in Court.
