Three persons believed to have been engaging in illegal mining at Akyem Apenamang in the Eastern Region have died after the mining pit caved in on them.
Speaking to Angel News, the Assembly man for the Akyem Apenamang, John Boakye, confirmed that, “I was in town and around 12 noon, I heard that a mining pit has collapsed and three people have died as a result. I therefore reported the case to the police so that they can handle issues from there. As we speak now, everything is in the hands of the police”
The victims of the incident, which occurred on Wednesday, September 8, 2021, have been identified as Yaw Bismark, Akosua Asantewaa and Yam Ntiamoah. Their bodies have been deposited at the St. Dominic Hospital Morgue.
According to PRO of the Eastern Regional Police Command, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh, police have begun investigations into the incident to uncover what happened.
Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong, had earlier cautioned mining companies within the region to be responsible in their activities.
In a stakeholder meeting in August this year, the minister urged mining companies to operate within the remit of their mining regulations as irresponsible mining activities would no longer be tolerated.
