Member of Parliament for Ejura Sekyedumase, Bawa Briama, has underscored that the recommendations by the three-member committee to investigate circumstances that led to the chaos at Ejura are an insult to the people of Ejura.
According to him, what the family of Social Activist, Kaaka Macho, and families of the two deceased persons and those who incurred injury need the most is justice.
The George Kingsley Koomson-led committee among other things recommended that adequate compensation be paid to families of the deceased – Abdul Nasir Yusif and Murtala Suraj Mohammed – and two other injured persons.
However, the Ejura MP rubbished the recommendation saying “compensation is good, but that cannot buy human life. Compensation cannot grow back the leg of the 16-year-old whose leg was amputated. How much money do you think can ever make them okay?”
Speaking to Angel TV’s Bismarck Mensah, he added that “what the families require is for the regional minister, [Simon Osei Mensah], who deployed the soldiers and the soldiers themselves together with their Lieutenant, Adusei, to be sanctioned according to the law. This is the only thing that would calm the families down”.
The Parliamentarian believes that both the families of affected individuals and the people of Ejura would be duly compensated and be at peace if the culprits are sanctioned.
Meanwhile, a security analyst, Adam Bona, who scored the committee’s work 80%, has also expressed disappointment that the Ashanti Regional Minister was left off the hook despite his confession.
Mr. Briama also lambasted the committee for citing in their tenth recommendation that sports and recreational facilities be established in Ejura Township to re-channel the energies of the youth.
“There is a recommendation that is an insult to the youth of Ejura. Let me put it on record that the youth of Ejura are not lazy people. We are farmers and we mostly go to our farms to earn a decent living. We don’t go about rampaging for money. No, it is not so, so for them to say that they should put up a recreational centre to get the youth to be busy, to me, is an insult”.
Additionally, the MP fired back at the committee for going beyond their mandate to pre-empt an ongoing investigation about Kaaka Macho’s death.
“Three persons have been arrested by the police in relation to Kaaka’s death and investigations are ongoing, so why should you pre-empt the investigations by saying that Kaaka’s death was caused by the family; not his social activism”.
