Former President, John Dramani Mahama, has lamented that the country’s economy is now in a mess due largely to the mismanagement of the country by the Akufo-Addo administration.
Speaking during a meeting with the Greater Accra Regional chiefs as part of his Thank You tour to the region, the former Ghana leader said Ghanaians ought to blame the Akufo-Addo administration for the mess.
“Ghana has never been as hard as this, times are difficult and I know that you are bearing the blunt of that difficulty because you are at the grassroots…so you know how difficult it is, the hardship are not easy…,” he said.
He further diagnosed that the increasing borrowing by the government which has resulted in the ballooning debt is the reason for the crisis.
“The hardship is not easy and we known the economy is in crisis, this government has been on a borrowing spree [and] today debt is overwhelming us…we’ve never been in debt to this extent ever before in this our life…,” he said.
The one-time Member of Parliament of Parliament (MP) for Bole who touted the achievement of his government in the Greater Accra Region while he was Presdient also blamed President Akufo-Addo for borrowing to the tune of up to 80% of the country’s GDP.
“Even at the time we went to HIPC, our debt to GDP ratio was not almost 80%, today we are almost 80% to GDP even with a rebased economy and so the economy has been run into a ditch…,” he added.
Former President Mahama is currently on a two-day tour to the region which the NDC won by 51%.
