Desmond Tutu’s demise: John Mahama calls on public to speak up for the voiceless and vulnerable

Former President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has paid tribute to late Archbishop Desmond Tutu, describing him as an epitome of “the voice of the voiceless”.

In a post on his official Facebook page, Mr. Mahama said Archbishop Desmond Tutu was a “foremost son of our continent. He was an eminent leader of Christian faith and a humanist whose calling in the service of humanity transcended religion.”

Recalling his uncompromising stance against apartheid in South Africa and injustices within and beyond the borders of the country, he quoted the late Archbishop as saying “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.

“If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.”

He therefore urged all and sundry to take cues from the late Archbishop and learn to speak up for the voiceless and the vulnerable in society but not to keep mute in the face of injustice.

“This way, the memories of him and many others like him, will never die but continue to live in our hearts and through our noble actions” the 2020 National Democratic Congress flagbearer said.

He however believes that the clergyman’s passing in the Christmas season “could only have been divinely scripted with him having lived a full life dedicated to God and humanity.”
