The President of Nigeria, Mohammadu Buhari, has urged the Super Green Eagles of Nigeria to win the ongoing 33rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations ongoing in Cameroon.
Nigeria on Wednesday January 20, 2022 defeated Guinea-Bissau 2-0 courtesy goals from Sadiq Umar and William Troost-Ekong to finish the group stage with 9 points
The team emerged as winners of Group D having record victories in all three games against Egypt, Sudan, and Guinea-Bissau to become the only side with a 100% record in the group stages.
Progressing to the Round of 16 and await their next opponent, President Buhari has backed the team to win the trophy in a bid to win their fourth continental glory.
“I urge them to maintain and even surpass the terrific form that has made them leaders in the group stage, and to remain good ambassadors of Nigeria on and off the field. The entire country looks forward with hope to a total of seven emphatic wins in this competition. Three down, four to go”.
“They are assured of my unflinching support as they soar like the Eagles that they are to write yet another brilliant chapter in the unfolding story of Nigerian football” President Buhari said in a congratulatory message on Facebook.
Nigeria has won the AFCON trophy on four occasions in 1980, 1994 and 2003.
