The Public Relations Officer for Ghanaian students in Ukraine, Benjamin Boateng, is pleading with Government of Ghana to take action now and evacuate them to safety.

According to him, life is precious and they are not ready to be casualties in the warfare between Russia and Ukraine.

He noted that though the over 1,000 Ghanaian students are not scared, they do not want to take any chances when their lives are at stake with the tensions gradually rising.

Speaking on Angel FM’s Anopa Bofo Morning Show, Benjamin Boateng said that “[government must] take action now. A life is precious… If there is something to do then it must be done now and hope for better days ahead.”

The Russian forces haven’t attacked any university or civilian residents however, military bases in Ukraine have been their targets so far, he declared.

Mr. Boateng disclosed that though civilians are not under attack, he reported that people in Ukraine are seeking safety in bomb shelters [underground buildings in subways where people can hide for protection] based on advice from mayors and other authorities.

The spokesperson for the students has debunked claims that the streets are dangerous and people can’t go out.

“I know there are rumours that you can’t step out, the streets are dangerous [and] fear is all over the place [but] I can confirm that this is not true. You can go out, you can get groceries at the supermarket…”

While allaying the fears of parents and relatives in Ghana, he clarified that “…the truth is that we the foreigners just want to be very careful that is why most people are worried and don’t want to go out. If you look at the streets now, the Ukrainians are walking, people are taking a stroll”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has so far asked nationals to seek refuge in government shelters or hide at home as it engages authorities on the next line of action.
