The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway has dismissed reports that a train transporting Ghanaians in Ukraine has been shot at.
She said during a press briefing on February 27, 2022, “debunk unsubstantiated reports such as alleging a train or a bus conveying some Ghanaians to East Ukraine was shot at”.
Madam Shirley added that “these are delicate times; let’s all endeavour to stay clear from sensationalism and unconfirmed reports, these only serve to heightening tension”.
According to her, collaborative efforts have been made and 220 compatriots have exited Ukraine and should be in Ghana any time soon whilst facilitating the arrival of a lot more.
The Minister also indicated that, 460 students have left Ukraine en route to Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, and Cheque Republic. The students will be received by officials of diplomatic missions and officials of student unions.
Meanwhile, she has said during the genesis of the Russia Ukraine invasion that, Ghanaians there should look for a safer place whilst government planned to evacuate them.
This many had criticized her for including the National Democratic Congress Youth Wing who released a press statement that government needed to take measures swiftly to evacuate Ghanaians in Ukraine.
However, the minister said many more Ghanaians are expected to arrive safely in Ghana soon.
