One person has died, while seven persons have sustained injuries after a cargo truck crashed into a stationary cargo truck along the Sefwi Dwinase-Bekwai road in the Western North Region.

The deceased who was a trader was offloading plantain into her shop when the vehicle ran into her on Tuesday, May 3, 2022.

She died on the spot, but the others were rushed to the Green Shield Hospital and the Sefwi Wiawso Municipal hospital.

“One of the vehicles is said to have lost control. The brake failed, so the driver had to run it into the crowd, killing one of the traders instantly,” said ASP Juliana Forson, Western North Regional MTTD Commander.

She however expressed regrets following efforts made at controlling motor traffic situations in the area to forestall such occurrences.

“Yesterday was a celebration day for our Muslim brothers and sisters, I came here and ensured that no body was lost or left scathed. I later went to the office to debrief my commander when I received a call informing me of the accident…If we have done everything within our power to ensure the safety of the people until yesterday when we received the unfortunate news.”

The Chief Linguist of the Sefwi Wiawso Traditional Council, Okyeamepanin Yaw Berko also spoke to the media. According to him, the occurrence has spurred them to strictly enforce the directive of the local authorities to traders about using selling along the stretch of road.
