At least one person is yet to be found after hours of search following the sinking of fishing vessel MV Comforter 2 on Friday May 6, 2022.

This was revealed by the Ghana Martime Authority on May 10, 2022 in a statement issued by the Management.

The incident is reported to have occurred at 46 nautical miles south of Saltpond in the Eastern Region.

MV Comforter 2, according the report, capsized when the crew attempted hauling a net with bumper catch at a time when there was high tides and strong winds.

The vessel, owned by Boatacom Enterprises Ltd, is confirmed to have had on board 26 crew–six Chinese and 20 Ghanaians.

According to the authority, “fourteen of the crew were rescued. The body of the Chinese captain was also retrieved, with ten crew members (Three of them Chinese) and the observer from the fisheries commission still missing”.

“The rescue party is continuing their search for the missing persons.”

The Authority noted that while the search still goes on, a committee has been tasked to conduct a Marine Casualty Investigation by analysing the “evidence available, and determine the casual factors, draw conclusions relevant to the casual factors and make safety recommendations.”

It urged operators of fishing vessels to ensure that they abide by the rules guiding their trade in order to preserve life and property.

This comes on the back of an “enhanced inspection campaign designed to ensure that all fishing vessels within the jurisdiction comply with all safety regulations to reduce fatal accidents at sea and save lives.”

“The campaign saw many fishing vessels sent to the Tema Ship Yard for repairs that have put them in great shape.”
